An 18-year-old was shot and killed Monday night inside a corner store in the Summerdale section of Northeast Philadelphia, police said, according to The Inquirer, NBC10, and 6abc.
Around 8:45 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21, 2nd District officers found the teen unresponsive in the customer takeout area of a mini-market at the corner of Marcella Street and Summerdale Avenue — reported as 899 Marcella Street / the 800 block of Marcella — with at least one gunshot wound to the head, Chief Inspector Scott Small said via those outlets. Police believe the shooter chased the unidentified man from the street into the store, NBC10 reported.
Investigators recovered roughly 26 spent shell casings — one next to the victim inside the store and the rest on the sidewalk and on Summerdale Avenue, Small said. Stray rounds pierced second-floor front bedroom windows of two occupied nearby homes; no residents were hurt, though occupants were shaken up, Small said via The Inquirer and 6abc.
Nearby, police found a stolen gray Nissan that had crashed into parked cars. The driver-side front and rear doors were open and the engine was still running, as if someone had fled the vehicle, Small said. The car did not have bullet holes, The Inquirer reported.
The victim was taken to Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital and pronounced dead at 8:59 p.m., The Inquirer reported. Store employees described him as a regular customer; 6abc reported an employee said he frequented the business to play games of skill. Police had not identified him publicly, and no arrest or motive had been announced in the coverage reviewed for this report.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 215-686-TIPS, 6abc reported.
