Woman Fatally Shot Through Locked Apartment Door In North Philly

A woman believed to be in her 50s was killed early Tuesday when a shot was fired through a locked apartment door at a complex on the 1500 block of Girard Avenue in North Philadelphia, NBC10 reported, citing Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Just after 3 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, officers responding to a reported break-in heard a gunshot from inside the building and found the woman bleeding heavily in a first-floor hallway, Small said via NBC10. She was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead at about 3:30 a.m., he said.

A steel apartment door near the woman had a single bullet hole. Small said investigators believe someone fired from inside the apartment, possibly striking the woman in the chest. The door was locked, required a passcode to open, and had no window or peephole, he said.

Preliminary information was that the woman who died was trying to enter that apartment when the shot was fired through the door, Small said. Inside the apartment, another woman also believed to be in her 50s — the resident — was believed to be the shooter in the incident, had a handgun in the apartment, and was cooperating and taken to police headquarters for questioning, Small said via NBC10. As of about 5:30 a.m., investigators intended to obtain a search warrant for the apartment, he said.

Building surveillance captured the incident, and police also interviewed a security guard who interacted with the victim before the shooting, NBC10 reported. The investigation was ongoing. No charges had been announced in the NBC10 account reviewed for this report. Anyone sought for questioning is presumed innocent.
