A suspect was taken into custody Friday night after a dark-colored Jeep was stolen during a pizza delivery on West Clearfield Street with a 14-year-old child still inside, according to Philadelphia Police Inspector D.F. Pace, as reported by FOX 29.
Around 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, a person who appeared to be in their 30s or 40s was delivering pizza near the 1600–1700 block of West Clearfield Street with their 14-year-old child in the vehicle, Pace said. The Jeep was left running with the keys inside when a suspect jumped in and drove off with the child still inside, according to FOX 29.
Officers from the 25th, 14th and 39th districts responded. Police located the Jeep as it tried to pull over. Officers were not chasing the vehicle when they saw a man get out; as they approached, the man fled on foot, was chased, and was taken into custody, Pace said. There were no injuries to officers or anyone involved, according to FOX 29.
Because a 14-year-old was taken in the stolen vehicle, police classified the case as an abduction of a minor. The investigation remains active. How or when the teenager got out of the Jeep was still unclear, Pace said.
NBC10 reported that police later determined a shootout near Broad Street and Allegheny Avenue around the same time was unrelated.
The child is not being named. The suspect is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
