A Philadelphia woman has been charged in Lancaster County in connection with the May 11 death of her infant daughter at a Leacock Township hotel spa tub, according to the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office, as reported by CBS Philadelphia and Local21.
Diontae Nicole Beckett, 25, of Philadelphia, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child, the DA’s office said. The charges relate to the death of 5-month-old A’zara Beckett at a Best Western Plus hotel in the East Newport Road area of Leacock Township, Local21 reported.
According to CBS Philadelphia, citing prosecutors, Beckett had been drinking, and a breathalyzer showed a blood alcohol content of 0.149% when she spoke with officers.
Beckett told police she never put the infant in the spa tub, CBS Philadelphia and the DA’s office said. Officers later found a photo and video on her phone showing the baby in the tub, according to those accounts.
Local21 reported that the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office ruled the manner of death an accident and the cause freshwater drowning. Those findings are attributed to the coroner’s office via Local21; the criminal case remains pending, and Beckett is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
Beckett was released after posting $100,000 bail, waived a preliminary hearing on Aug. 26, and is scheduled for arraignment Sept. 25 in county court, CBS Philadelphia reported.
