Warrington Man Charged After Backing Into Pedestrian and Leaving Scene, Police Say

A 60-year-old Warrington man is charged with a felony after police say he backed out of a driveway at high speed, struck a pedestrian, and never told officers he was the driver.

Warrington Township police charged Anwar Hussain on Aug. 31 after they say he struck a pedestrian while backing out of a driveway in the 600 block of Addison Way and left without identifying himself.

Officers, firefighters, and rescue crews were first called to the block around 9:01 a.m. for a person injured in a fall, according to a Warrington Township Police Department arrest report posted on CrimeWatch. They found the victim in the roadway, screaming in pain, with obvious head trauma. The victim was taken to Abington Hospital as a Level 1 trauma patient.

About 40 minutes later, a neighbor told police it may have been a hit-and-run, not a fall. Video obtained by investigators showed a vehicle backing out of a driveway at a high rate of speed as the victim walked along the sidewalk. Police say the vehicle struck the victim and threw them about six to eight feet.

Police identified Hussain, of Warrington, as the driver. After the crash, they say he got out, checked on the victim, then drove up the driveway toward a residence at a high rate of speed. He later ran back toward the scene carrying a cellphone. Once police, fire, and ambulance crews left, police say Hussain drove the striking vehicle to his job in Philadelphia.

Investigators say Hussain never called 911 and did not tell officers he had been involved while emergency crews were still there. Police say he was present when officers asked bystanders if anyone knew what happened and remained silent.

Hussain later was found at his workplace and voluntarily went to the Warrington police station, where he was interviewed, police said.

He was arraigned by Judge Wertman, who set bail at $100,000 unsecured. Hussain faces a felony count of accidents involving death or personal injury, a misdemeanor count of recklessly endangering another person, and summary charges of duty to give information and render aid, reckless driving, and emerging from an alley, driveway, or building.

He is presumed innocent. Criminal charges are allegations.
