Lawrence Cary, 44, has been charged with murder in the Aug. 16, 2022, shooting death of Armand Hayes, 30, near 60th and Vine streets in West Philadelphia’s 19th District, NBC10 Philadelphia reported, citing court documents and Philadelphia police.
According to NBC10, officers heard gunshots around 1 a.m. and found Hayes in the roadway suffering from multiple gunshot wounds; he died several hours later. A witness told police they saw a man in an SUV fire a gun from the driver’s seat out the passenger-side window toward Hayes, court documents said, per NBC10.
NBC10 reported that court documents say Hayes and a man police identified as Cary had been fighting inside a nearby bar before the shooting. Investigators later used surveillance video, bar receipts, a license plate reader capture of Cary’s SUV in the area around the time of the homicide, and phone records in the case, according to NBC10’s account of court records. Investigators allege Cary transferred ownership of an SUV linked to the case a week after the homicide, NBC10 said.
NBC10 reported that an August 2026 video review preceded the charging. Prosecutors obtained an arrest warrant on Aug. 14, 2026, and police arrested Cary on Aug. 26. A judge denied bail; Cary is scheduled to return to court Sept. 14, NBC10 reported. Hayes’ death had been listed among Philadelphia police’s unsolved homicides until Cary’s arrest. Cary is presumed innocent; the charges are allegations.
