A 56-year-old man is in custody after his van struck two police cruisers and another vehicle on Girard Avenue in Brewerytown early Monday, Philadelphia police said. At least four people were injured.
Police said the crash happened around 2:23 a.m. at Girard Avenue and 28th Street. Officers were already on the block investigating a burglary in progress when they heard a black Mercedes van approaching at a high rate of speed, eastbound on Girard.
The van struck a vehicle, then a marked police cruiser, then an unmarked police vehicle, police said. After that impact, the van went airborne and landed on the unmarked cruiser.
The driver got out and was taken into custody at the scene. Police said he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
